Chevrolet Cobalt Service & Repair Manual: Instrument Panel

1. Remove console as outlined in "Floor Console.".
2. Remove glove compartment door, Fig. 1.
3. Remove passenger side instrument trim panel in sequence, Fig. 2.
4. Remove driver information center switch, Fig. 3.
5. Remove driver side kick knee bolster panel and tilt steering wheel upward.
6. Disconnect lefthand instrument panel trim plate assembly by pulling away from instrument panel retainer, Fig. 4. Disconnect instrument panel dimmer switch and fog lamp switch.
7. Remove outer trim covers from instrument panel using suitable flat-bladed tool, Fig. 5.
8. Remove instrument panel center trim panel and disconnect electrical connectors.
9. Remove instrument panel cluster bezel trim panel, Fig. 6.
10. Remove passenger air bag module.
11. Remove defroster grille, Fig. 7.
12. Remove mounting screws and instrument panel trim pad, Fig. 8.
13. Place steering wheel in straight forward position.
14. Remove steering wheel center pad and mounting screws as required.
15. Remove covers and two driver air bag module mounting bolts from steering wheel rear.
16. Disconnect driver air bag module electrical connector.
17. Remove air bag module.
18. Disconnect horn electrical connector.
19. Remove steering wheel nut.
20. Remove steering wheel using steering wheel puller No. J1859A, or equivalent.
21. Disconnect electrical connectors from steering wheel.
22. Remove steering wheel from column.
23. Unsnap and remove upper steering column cover.
24. Remove lower steering column cover screws and trim cover.
25. Disconnect head lamp/turn signal harness connector, then wiper/washer harness connector from SIR coil module assembly.
26. Disconnect SIR coil harness connector from SIR coil module assembly.
27. Pry retaining tabs away at base of SIR coil assembly using a small flat-bladed tool, then slide SIR coil assembly off of steering column.
28. Disconnect ignition lock cylinder, ignition switch theft deterrent control module electrical connectors.
29. Slide intermediate shaft off steering column, then disconnect electronic power steering control module connectors.
30. Loosen steering mounting bolts and lower column.
31. Remove HVAC air ducts.
32. Remove instrument panel in sequence, Fig. 9.
33. Reverse procedure to install, noting following:
  a. Torque column mid-pivot bolt to 18 ft. lbs.
  b. Torque column mounting bolt to 18 ft. lbs.
  c. Torque column trim cover screws to 18 inch lbs.
  d. Torque column upper jacket bolt to 97 inch lbs.
  e. Torque instrument panel nut to 18 ft. lbs.
  f. Torque instrument panel screw to 20 inch lbs.
  g. Torque intermediate shaft pinch bolt to 25 ft. lbs.
  h. Torque steering wheel nut to 35 ft. lbs.
