Chevrolet Cobalt Service & Repair Manual: Rack & Pinion Assembly, Replace

1. Ensure front wheels are in straight ahead position, then secure steering wheel to prevent rotation.
2. Raise and support vehicle, then remove wheel and tire assemblies.
3. Remove steering gear to intermediate shaft pinch bolt. Discard bolt.
4. Separate steering gear from intermediate shaft.
5. Remove attaching nut from outer tie rod ball stud.
6. Remove outer tie rod ball stud from steering knuckle using ball joint separator tool No. J24319-B, or equivalent.
7. Remove steering gear mounting bolts.
8. Remove rear transaxle mount.
9. Remove steering gear from frame, then from vehicle through lefthand wheel opening.
10. Reverse procedure to install.
