Chevrolet Cobalt Service & Repair Manual: Description & Operation

The SIR system helps supplement the protection offered by the driver and front passenger seat belts by deploying air bag module from the center of steering wheel, passenger's instrument panel, front and rear sides of seats and from the sides of the roof panel. The air bags will deploy when the vehicle is involved in a crash of sufficient force up to 30° off the vehicle centerline.
In addition to air bag module, certain vehicles may contain seat belt pretensioners that tighten the seat belt in the event of a collision, thus reducing the distance between the occupant and the seat belt when an air bag module is deployed.
