Chevrolet Cobalt Service & Repair Manual: Wheel Lug Stud, Replace
Suspension fasteners are critical
components because they affect performance of vital components and systems
and their failure may result in major service expense. New components must
be installed with the same component numbers or equivalent components, if
replacement is required. Do not use a replacement component of lesser quality
or substitute design. Tightening values must be used as specified during
reassembly to ensure correct retention of these components. |
Use washers that have an ID that
is larger than the OD of the wheel stud serrations. Use enough washers (approximately
four) to allow the wheel stud to fully seat against the hub flange. |
Some models may require a suitable
press to remove studs instead of C-Frame and screw Installer/Remover. |
1. |
Remove wheel and tire as outlined in
"Wheel, Replace." |
2. |
On models equipped with caliper
anchor plate, remove anchor plate bolts and position brake caliper
and anchor plate assembly aside. |
3. |
On models without caliper anchor
plate, remove caliper bolts and position brake caliper assembly
aside. |
4. |
On all models, support brake
caliper assembly using mechanics wire, or equivalent. Do not allow
brake caliper and anchor plate assembly to hang from brake hose
or damage to hose may result. |
5. |
Remove brake disc/wheel hub as equipped. |
6. |
Remove wheel stud using C-Frame and
screw Installer/Remover, or equivalent. |
7. |
Reverse procedure to install, note
following: |
|
a. |
Position new wheel stud in wheel hub,
aligning serrations in wheel hub flange made by original wheel stud. |
|
b. |
Place approximately four washers over
outside end of wheel stud and thread a standard wheel nut onto wheel
stud with flat side against washers. |
|
c. |
Tighten wheel nut until wheel stud
head seats against back side of wheel hub flange. |
|
d. |
Remove and discard wheel nut and washers. |
